The pictures on this page were shot by Philip Chen
from 1985 to 1987. All originals were shot with a 4"x5"
slide. A picture has 3000x5000 pixels with each pixel having a
total of 36 bits for r, g, b (tri-color) resolution. A Cray XMP
was used to render the pictures, and a Digital Film Printer of
Image International, Inc.(III) was used to record the pixels
onto color slides. An average picture rendering time was 20 minutes,
and the slide shooting time was 10 minutes. |
Digital Productions was a pioneer in special effects and computer
graphics. It was the first and the last company that used
supercomputer technology to produce computer graphics. It had
about 100 persons at its peak production time. Notable effects
are in the movies: The Last Star Fighter, Labyrinth, and
2010 Space Odessy.
Digital Productions was purchased by Omnibus in the fall
of 1986, and it subsequently merged with Abels Associates. All
three companies were famous for their works in producing commercials
and movies. In the spring of 1987, Digital Productions--Omnibus-Abels
became history. However, many persons who worked for these companies
became successful, and some of them were subsequently nominated
and/or awarded Oscars.
